FAQ

What is leopard gecko, and are they biting and make lots of noise like their cousin Tokay Gecko?
Leopard gecko / LG  is a type of gecko that originally from Pakistan, India, and the surrounding area. They are very tame, would not bite, cannot make a loud noise and unable to climb a clean surface, unlike their cousin, Tokay Gecko. LG makes a great pet for children to advance breeder.

What type of housing they required?
LG is a terrestrial animal, floor area is more important than volume. 60 x 40 cm Aquarium is enough to house 3-4 animals. Even though they cannot climb but they are somehow an escape artist and cover will be needed. The cover will also to protect your LG against vermin like rat and mouse, which like to make your LG as their dinner.

Simple LG cages will only required an aquarium or plastic container, substrate, a hide and flat drinking bowl.

Can I house more than one gecko together?
If they are still young less than 5 months old, and given their cages is big enough, then yes, you can house more than one gecko together. Male gecko as they grew older will show aggression to other male gecko, so they have to be kept separately, otherwise they will fight to death. Female will not fight and can be kept together.

What are LG eating?
LG are insectivore. Cricket, mealworm, or superworm is all suitable as Leopard gecko food.  Waxworm is suitable only for a treat not as staple diet as they are high in fat. We feed all our LG solely on young cricket that have not grown their wings. They are the contains the least chitin and easier to digest.

All the food item have to be “gut loaded”, they were given a dried chicken/fish/dog/cat and vegetables for their food and drink until they are plump before given to your LG. A good food item will also mean a quality meal for your LG.

Which calcium I should use with or without D3?
LG need a calcium supplement if they were raised on newspaper. They were place is a flat dish for the LG to lick on. If you are giving your gecko a routine supplement, we suggest you are using a calcium WITHOUT D3, as overdose of these vitamin is poisonous and lethal to your LG.

Do LG need a UV light?
LG is a nocturnal animals, it means they are active during night. They do not need any UV light and need not any UVB or UVA lighting. They do not need sunlight, as matter of fact, they will died if you put them under the sunlight too long.

What the difference between UVB and UVA??
UVB is the correct UV for the formation of vitamin D3, whereas UVA is use to increase the appetite of you reptile.

What kind of substrate I should use?
There are two main substrate currently used for LG. They are calcium powder (zeolite) and newspaper. Both of the substrate was good, but they have their limitation as well

Newspaper / paper towel, they are very easy to find, can be replaced when they are dirty and relatively cheap. Calcium has to be given in form of calcium powder in a bowl. Because they have to be replaced daily, they will create extra works for people with high number of animals.

Zeolite powder is absorbing water and also smells, they need not to be replaced daily. Spot clean of fecal matter will be enough. When they get dirty then they can be replaced fully every 6 months. They contain about 17% of calcium, so calcium supplement is not needed. They are very dusty when used, and can caused compaction. To reduce the risk, only in powder form, can be used not in granular. Granula size which used as hamster or cat litter, is not suitable for leopard gecko.

How to differentiate male and female?
LG male and female where differentiate by their hemispores and hemipenis bulge. A male LG have a rough hemispores and two hemipenis bulge at the base of the tail. This characteristic were missing in LG female.

When can I start breeding LG?
Breeding LG is relatively easy. You will need at least one male and a female. LG can be put together as early as 8 months, but we strongly suggested that you start putting LG together at 12 months. When they are being put together, mating will occured almost immediately. Female will lay two eggs 14-28 days after succesful mating.

What does Het, possible Het, and Incubated male / female means?
Het mean that the animals is carrying a certain genes, whereas a possible het is an animal that is possible for carrying a certain genes. For example, when we bred a normal to an albino, we will get het albino, on the other hand when we bred a het albino and a het albino, from 4 animals hatch, one will be albino and the rest (3) will be normal in appearance. From the gecko that have normal in appearance, 2 of them were het for albino. So further we can conclude that the normal is 2/3 possible het for albino or 66% possible het albino.

Incubated male / female means that during their incubation of the egg, they have been specially kept at certain temparature to lock their sexes.

Why is my gecko not eating?
If you just received your LG, then it is probably stressed because they are still acclimating to their new home. We suggest that you do not handle them first and only give them 1-3 cricket every second day until they finished their meal then you can start increase them to 5 crickets every second day.

If you are live in a cold place, then their surrounding is too cold. Cold temperature will make them become less active. Their optimum temperature is 28-32 degree Celsius. Try to put a spot light (25-60 watt) at one of the corner of the cages. The placement of the light is crucial as it will determine the flow of air and enable the LG to choose their optimum temperature.

The size of the cages also important, a cage that too big will make it harder to chase the food item.
